since my character is part of the issues that have been addressed by several posters, i thought that i would clear this up:.
teejay said: conclusion: no more insulting than you when you mentioned that one has to wonder about someone who'd pick the screen name "amazing.".
i am not sure if teejay shares agreement with what he quoted, but for discussion sake, i will treat it as though he does.
While I was posting you replied to Tina. Glad to see your memory is back.

When I joined H20, I initially used the term "Simply Amazing" because it captured my reactions to many things I have been learning as a result of leaving the JW religion. Some here may recall my initial use of the full term.
Actually, I remember more than that. I remember that your screen name was "Annointed", and "Simply Amazing" was your signature. You introduced yourself as someone who claimed to be of the annointed while a JW; that was a red flag for me at the time (and surely for some others). The Society says that young people who claim to be of the annointed either have psycollogical issues or are looking for prominence (or both); I agree with the Society on this one.
His Holliness has to be very careful in this board, because some of us has better memory than Him.

in a post yesterday, englishman asked "please name 'just one' atrocity done in the name of atheism".
i offered the crimes of gengis khan, stalin and mao tze tung.
i would have liked a discussion on that, but such as life is on a discussion bored, it never eventuated.
the plastic Jesus brigade with thier loud mouthed preaching and 'last days' mentality can be dismissed as harmless and uniquely American
Hello Uncle,
I didn't read the whole post, but this that you say about American fundamentalism is true. I've lived in South America, the US and now in Europe, and only in the US I have seen that fundamentalists are considered mainstream. That's why they make me laugh when they say that JW are a cult; in Latin American and in Europe, JW, Pentecostals and Evangelicals are all put in the same bag.

i just want to get back to some basics here, this post is not meant to take the mickey.. i am of the opinion that the above-mentioned phrase is something that jw's absorb into their sub-conscious minds over a long period of time, with the end result that they actually do believe that jehovah does indeed operate through this organisation.. can someone please take me step by step through this essential belief of jw's, right from when the idea of an earthly org was first mooted.
i can't find any scriptural backing for this belief at all, not one tiny bit.
even if i really stretch and link isolated scriptures there just does not seem to be any basis for belief here at all.
More to the point of your question: by cleverly selecting parts of Acts you can "prove" (fundy style) that early christianity was a homogeneous movement under the leadership of the Apostles, so that you could call it, in effect, an "earthly organization". Of course you have to ignore Paul's letters, especially Galatians, but then again Dubs and fundies never read the Bible to get the big picture, they just look for proof texts.
Coupled with this is the (wrong) idea that today's christianity should resemble first century christianity. If you set that as your standard, you are forced to discard all mainstream christian churches, because nothing could be further removed from the unpopular and persecuted little sect that christianity originally was than one of today's main churches.

Well I can't tell you step by step through this belief, but I will tell you how I used to see things, having been "born in the truth". I thought (or better the dubs made me think) that if there was a God (which I didn't doubt at the time) there had to be one true religion (and no more than one for obvious logical reasons). By properly demonizing other religions, specially catholicism, the Society convinced me that there was only one acceptable religion left: The Truth! So, in my case, it wasn't so much what they said for their supposed Spirit-direction but what they said against other religions.

tired from another long day i entered home and immediately knew something was wrong.
it was very quiet and the only light on was in the kitchen.
entering the room it was spotless, clean dishes and glasses shining in the dishrack of the sink.
The W.B.T.S has set up a religion of pain and sorrow
Because they try to enforce a one-size-fits-all lifestyle that is not for everybody. If my memory doesn't fail me, that's Ray Franz diagnostic in "In search ..." and I agree completely. Some people are strong enough to say "enough is enough" and leave for good, even thinking that JW "have the truth". I did that myself after a year in a emotional rollercoaster; only four years later I found "the truth about the truth". But my sister, for instance, is not emotionally strong enough to break away completely, and has been in and out for fifteen years. I think this problem affects both men and women, but somehow men seem to be able to cope better with it.

an article in the daily express today cites a study that claims the average person is getting brainier.it claims,.
"the average child in britian today would have been hailed a genius 60 years ago".
do you think this is true?.
Well Sleepy, I think you're asking two very different questions here.
If people are getting brainier, I don't think so. What I think is that the education system in developed countries is more efficient now than it was 50 years ago and takes better advantage of kid's intellectual capacity.
That the JW will have more trouble converting middle-class people will be a consequence of widespread information via Internet, more than anything else.

if you believe armageddon is coming, a few questions:.
armageddon: what is your belief of how your life will be immediatly following armageddon?
what is your belief of how your life will be within 1-5 years of armageddon?
What is your belief of how your life will be immediatly following armageddon?
Pretty much like it is now. Jeho-bah will spare Switzerland because it's a neutral country.
What is your belief of how your life will be within 1-5 years of armageddon?
We'll eventually accept the Euro. Even the British will.
What will you eat?
Fondue, raclette and Lindt & Sprungli chocolate.
What will the animals eat?
It's their problem, not mine.
Where will you live?
Here. Why move?

hey guys,.
the family and i just got back from seeing the movie.
those of you who read the books will not be disappointed!
I'm hoping the movie will bring something to the story that I found sorely missing when I read the books: life.
COMF, when you read a book it is your own imagination what gives life to the story. Plus, some characters and situations in LOTR are very methaforic, and you have to see it in that light.
I'm really sorry you missed the greatness of Tolkien's books, because there aren't too many books like that around. Perhaps it was too much to ask from a Texan.
